ACTH(4-10) heptapeptide · nasal drops in Russia, never approved by the FDA or EMA
A synthetic heptapeptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro: the ACTH(4-7) fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone with the synthetic Pro-Gly-Pro sequence attached at the end. That is why the literature names it two different ways -an "ACTH(4-10) analogue" or an "ACTH(4-7)PGP peptide"- even though it actually has seven amino acids, not ten. It was developed in the 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. In Russia it is given as nasal drops and is on the Russian List of Vital & Essential Drugs as a neuroprotective agent for ischemic stroke, encephalopathy and cognitive disorders; in animal models of cerebral ischemia it is credited with acting on inflammation, cell-death and neurotrophin genes, and it activates dopaminergic and serotoninergic systems in rodents. Neither the US FDA nor the European EMA evaluated or approved it for any indication, and outside Russia and a neighboring former-USSR country it has no registration as a medicine.
